Guatefriends--the G is for great!

Guatefriends is superb. I had the greatest time with Ana and Joe. The food was great, my room was fantastic, my roommate was nice too. Seriously, this place has the best vibe and it feels very safe. I'm a girl, and I was traveling alone and I felt perfectly comfortable.

Una casa en Guatemala

Buenisimo hostel. Me gustó mucho hospedarme allá.

Abrazos Thadeu

Best hostel in Central America

I've stayed with Joe and Ana on two occasions and highly recommend them.  My previous experiences in hostels led me to return to hotels, but when I read the comments by past guests I decided to give GuateFriends a try.

Staying with Joe and Ana is more like staying with family than at a hostel.  You can keep to yourself if you like or just use it as a stopping point, but if you want or need to hang out in Guate for awhile, this is the place.  Joe is a great cook, Ana is a personable host, the mini-bar is well stocked and you can relax on the couch and zone out or sit on the patio and soak up the sun.

If you're thinking about relocating to Guatemala, Joe and Ana are a wealth of knowledge.  Ana has lived here her entire life and comes from a respected family.  Joe is a transplant but has lived here for years and been through the trials of starting a business, hiring and training employees, and building a home.  So put down the guidebook for a few days, eat a few meals with Joe and Ana (and no doubt put on a few pounds), and get to know the REAL Guatemala.

One final observation may be of interest to prospective guests; I made friends on both occasions that I stayed at GuateFriends.  I still email them regularly.  We live very different lives, see the world from a different viewpoint and our paths would most certainly not cross again except for the friendship we developed in just a few days with Joe and Ana.  Months later I am still swapping email with fellow guests from GuateFriends.

If you're coming to Guate, don't waste your money at a hotel or risk a bad experience at a hostel, stay with family at GuateFriends.

the perfect balance.

what started out as a plan to visit guatemala city as quickly as possible, ended in a month and a half stay at guatefriends. we were immediately drawn to joe, ana, and little angelo and of course, the impeccable charm, delectable food and general atmosphere of the hostal itself.

we have been traveling central america for the past seven months, as a sort of conscious journey, memorizing all of the special people, places and moments. joe, ana and angelo (as well as candy, eric and wesley) will remain in our traveling hearts as we venture off to other parts.

guatefriends is legitimately one of the most clean, colorful, hospitable, comfortable, welcoming places we have ever been. it is truly a gem tucked away from the din of a large city. indeed, ana and joe have perfected the perfect balance of guatemalan tradition and international flair. every detail of the hostal, from the timeliness of breakfast to the decor of the dorm rooms, is eloquently distributed with ease and purpose.

guatefriends is truly any travelers' dream - your home away from home. we love it!

so here's to you, ana and joe...
from your one and only, dimsum.

Home away from home
I stayed at Guatefriends for over two months while doing my summer internship and was very lucky to find this home away from home. Joe and Ana became like family to me within days of my stay, and I never thought I would feel so comfortable in a bed and breakfast.  Joe's cooking was especially appreciated in a city where fast food fried chicken is probably the most popular meal and it was always nice to talk to them as well as the many travelers that came through. The combination of good food, company, hot showers, cleanliness and other unique touches is extremely hard to come by. Joe and Ana, I hope to see you guys again soon!
